What’s an EMEN, anyway?

This is the big question, right? What is this network, who is it for, and what will it do? We don’t pretend to have all the answers, but we do strongly believe that there is a space for a community where ethnic minority groups and individuals who are concerned about the climate crisis can come together with one voice. Not just because we may have friends and families living in parts of the world that are already affected by climate change – though that’s important too. But also because our voices are not being heard, or if they are being heard, they are not being listened to. EMEN won’t make that change overnight, but we hope we can play a part, with our colleagues across the environmental movement, to amplify the voices of marginalised communities in the struggle for climate justice. All fine words. But what does it mean in practice?

What is EMEN?

The Ethnic Minority Environmental Network creates connections between ethnic minority groups and individuals, and mainstream organisations addressing climate change and climate justice in Scotland. EMEN promotes local and national actions that address climate change while being more inclusive of ethnic minority voices.

What Does EMEN Do?

EMEN exists to amplify the voices of our members and build their capacity. We do this through events, workshops, our fortnightly bulletin (sign up here!), policy work and consultations. We want to take an innovative approach to the support we are funded to offer, and as such we have exciting plans for the next few months including a new podcast and some in-depth consultative work.

Who Do We Do It For?

We answer to the ethnic minority groups and individuals working on the ground in the environmental sector, and we take our lead from them. However, it goes without saying that we want to connect and create partnerships with stakeholders throughout the environmental sector in Scotland – there is a space for everyone in EMEN.

How Do We Do It?

We are proud to be funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, and we gratefully acknowledge their support – without them, this new initiative would not exist.

Who Are We?

EMEN is facilitated by CEMVO Scotland, a national intermediary organisation which exists to build capacity on the ethnic minority voluntary sector in Scotland. Get in touch to find out more!

What Does it Cost?

Being part of EMEN is free.
